About the place

Sagarnal is a union in Juri upazila of Moulvibazar with hilly forest. It sees far fewer photographers than Lawachara or Satchari, and there is little published about its birds.

That is exactly why it is interesting. An exploratory outing here is about reading the terrain, finding active spots and documenting what we find — the kind of fieldwork that slowly builds knowledge of a place.

What we hope to photograph

A birding trip report from November 2024 recorded the species below at Sagarnal on a single morning. They show what is possible here — not what we will see.

  • Asian Fairy Bluebird and Blue-eared Barbet, which gave good photographic chances on that trip
  • Rufous-fronted Babbler and White-browed Scimitar Babbler — very shy in thick cover
  • White-browed Piculet and Nepal Fulvetta
  • Raptors including Jerdon’s Baza, Japanese Sparrowhawk and Amur Falcon
  • Mammals such as Barking Deer were also noted

Photography opportunities

  • Exploratory forest birding and field documentation
  • Canopy birds around fruiting trees
  • Raptors and birds in flight over open patches
  • Landscape images where forest meets tea gardens

Recommended gear

  • A long telephoto lens for shy forest birds
  • A light setup you are happy to carry up and down hilly paths
  • A notebook or phone for recording what you see — part of the point of exploring
  • Rain protection, insect repellent, water and sturdy shoes

The field experience

Expect hilly paths and a searching pace: we move between spots, listen, and stop wherever the forest is active. Some birds here are extremely shy, so good views take time.

Because the area is less documented, plans stay flexible and access will be checked locally before we go.

Join the outing

This is an exploratory location, so plans stay flexible. Register your interest if you would like to come along when I go. Dates, transport, accommodation, permits and any costs are confirmed individually before each outing.

Research & Field References

Species named on this page have been recorded here by others; none are guaranteed on any outing. References last checked November 2026.

How we work in the field

  • No call playback, baiting or luring — we wait for natural behaviour.
  • No approaching nests or roosts, and no handling wildlife.
  • We stay on permitted trails and respect protected-area rules and local communities.
  • No drones inside protected areas unless the necessary permission has been obtained.
  • Sightings are never guaranteed — wild animals keep their own schedule.
