Life Between Water & Sky
In August 2026, I returned to Tanguar Haor for a two-day journey and one night on the water. We travelled from Sylhet to Sunamganj, then boarded our houseboat at Anwar Ghat. I came with a Canon R5 Mark II, lenses, a drone, and a small video kit—but the real purpose was to look again at a place that has meant a great deal to me for years.
The haor was still vast and beautiful, but it was no longer quiet. Heat, crowds, engine noise, plastic, and the growing number of tourist boats were difficult to ignore. When the others went ashore at Shimul Garden, I stayed on the boat. I did not want to look too closely at what had happened to one of my favourite places.
Yet Tanguar Haor continued to offer something stronger than disappointment. At dawn, I watched a young boy leave in a small boat to fish beside his father. Other children rowed freely across the water and jumped in to swim. Along the Jadukata River, many boats worked together at the sand port while people carried on with labour that looked almost impossibly hard.
These photographs are about that contrast: beauty and pressure, freedom and labour, water and survival. More than a record of a landscape, they are a portrait of the people whose everyday courage gives the haor its deepest meaning.
